University of Ghana Organizes it’s first Virtual Matriculation Ceremony

On 5th February 2021, the University of Ghana organized its maiden college-based virtual matriculation ceremony for freshers for the 2020/2021 academic year.

The Vice-Chancellor’s address, delivered on his behalf by Provosts of the four Colleges, provided the following enrolment statistics: for the 2020/2021 academic year, the University has enrolled 15,020 undergraduate students, of which 49.5% are female and 50.5% male. This breaks down into College of Health Sciences, 652; College of Basic and Applied Sciences, 2,355; College of Education, 3,368; and College of Humanities, 8,645.

Welcoming the international students, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted international students enrolment for the 2020/2021 academic year, with only 70 international students registered, compared to 409 in the previous academic year. He indicated that majority of the international students were from the African sub-region, the rest coming from Asia, Europe, and America. He urged the foreign students to enjoy their stay and studies in the University of Ghana.

The Vice-Chancellor also reported that the Student Financial Aid Office has provided full or partial scholarships to needy but brilliant students of the University; and that during the 2019/2020 academic year, the University awarded a total of GH¢ 2,796,519.00 to 981 students. He expressed sincere gratitude to donors for their regular support and continuous donation.

The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the students to strive for excellence and adhere to University rules and regulations. He also admonished them to observe all COVID-19 protocols.

The Matriculation Oath was administered to representatives of the students by the College Secretaries on behalf of the Registrar. In turn, the student representatives delivered expectation speeches on behalf of their cohorts and symbolically signed the Matricula on behalf of their cohorts.

However, all freshers are to sign the online Matricula, which is a statutory requirement for all enrollees.
