UG Student’s research reveals that Coronavirus existed in Ghana since 2013
Research conducted by an MPhil student from the University of Ghana has revealed that Coronavirus existed in Ghana since 2013.
In the research conducted, the student by name Prince Kofi Parbie dived deep into the infections of Human Coronavirus in Ghana.
The research which was conducted across all the then ten regions and the Hajj Pilgrims revealed that this global pandemic has been with us for several years.
The study was approved by the Ethical and Protocol Review Committee of the University
of Ghana Medical School, College of Health Sciences; Protocol identification number
(MS-Et/M.9-P3.1/2013-2014).
So we ask, are we serious as a nation? Students are doing marvelous research in their academic theses but it seems no one gives those studies any second thought. We allow them to gather dust in shelves and when the findings in those academic projects get real, we behave like ‘freshly born Amazon babies’.
What is Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are common among animals. In rare cases, they are what scientists call zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted from animals to humans, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Who is at risk most for Coronavirus
It is a dangerous disease with an incubation period between 4-6 days. It is fatal especially for those with a weakened immune system, the elderly and the very young. It could also result in Pneumonia and bronchitis.
How Coronavirus spreads
Viruses can spread from human contact with animals and also from human to human.
When it comes to human-to-human transmission of the viruses, often it happens when someone comes into contact with the infected person’s secretions. The exposure factors are;
- a cough
- sneeze or
- handshake
The virus can also be transmitted by touching something an infected person has touched and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.
