Accra, Ghana — In a significant diplomatic gesture underscoring the enduring friendship between Ghana and India, President John Dramani Mahama has conferred Ghana’s highest state honour, the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The award ceremony took place during Prime Minister Modi’s official visit to Ghana, marking a moment President Mahama described as “a moment of honour.”

In a statement shared on his official social media channels, President Mahama praised Prime Minister Modi for his “distinguished leadership and significant role in strengthening the deep friendship and cooperation between our two nations.”

“This award celebrates his remarkable commitment to advancing shared development priorities and fostering stronger Ghana-India ties,” President Mahama noted.

The Order of the Star of Ghana is reserved for individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the Republic of Ghana and humanity. Prime Minister Modi’s recognition reflects India’s longstanding partnership with Ghana, dating back to the early post-independence era and continuing through collaboration in trade, infrastructure, health, and capacity building.

During the visit, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in technology, renewable energy, education, and investment. They also pledged to explore new avenues to promote cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Observers see the conferral of this honour as a strong signal of Ghana’s appreciation for India’s development support and a renewed commitment to elevate diplomatic relations to even greater heights.

The visit concluded with optimism from both governments about the prospects of even more dynamic cooperation in the years ahead.
