No science and data behind irresponsible dumping of students in schools – Franklin Cudjoe

No science and data behind irresponsible dumping of students: President and Chief Executive Officer policy think tank, Imani Africa, Franklin Cudjoe has described as irresponsible, the decision to reopen schools for final year Junior High School(JHS) students, final year Senior High School(SHS) students and SHS second gold track students, insisting that there is no science and data behind the action.

Following a directive from President Nana Akufo-Addo, schools were reopened on 22nd June 2020 for Senior High Schools and 29th June for junior high schools.

In making the announcement, the President assured that adequate measures had been put in place to enable schools to observe the safety protocols against contracting the virus.

But Mr. Cudjoe has described the decision as irresponsible: “There is no science and data behind the irresponsible decision to dump students in schools when the President and managers of education are hiding from the virus. I wonder what parents and teachers think though. Doesn’t make sense,” he asserted in a post on Facebook.

Since the reopening several cases of COVID-19 have been reported in some senior high schools forcing many to call for the closure of the schools

But Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye has defended the reopening and continuation of school activities, arguing that it was expected that cases will be recorded and closing the schools is not the way to stem the spread

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians, especially on Facebook, are calling for schools to be closed once again considering the cases being recorded and the fear and panic among students and parents.

This week parents and guardians stormed the Accra Girls’ SHS to take their children and wards home after some cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the school.
