Ashanti Region: NIA begins registration without a single card issued so far

Nobody among the residents of the Ashanti Region who managed to get their information captured by the National Identification Authority has been issued a card as the exercise began without cards in stock, MyNewsGh.com has learned.

The exercise which started from Wednesday, 11th December 2019 and will continue all the way to the 8th January 2020 saw zero card issuances in the entire Ashanti Region.

Many residents who queued early dawn to get the cards were disappointed there were no cards and in particular, areas where residents were to be served by five workstations, only one was functioning. MyNewsGh.com reporters who visited mote than 27 centers across the region reported a slow process.

For example, the exercise could not come on at all at the Parkoso areas because of this glitch while some areas in Bekwai and Obuasi saw scuffles between residents and registration officials.

The National Identification Authority (NIA) had earlier claimed all was set for the commencement of the mass registration of the Ghana Card in the Ashanti Region for qualified Ghanaian citizens.

The exercise which currently being done in 833 registration centers will start at 7 am and end at 5 pm every day excluding Sundays and statutory public holidays.

An applicant has to appear in person and possess an Original/Copy of Birth Certificate of the applicant or a Copy of a valid Ghanaian Passport of the applicant, digital address of the applicant and an original/Copy of Naturalization Certificate.

The NIA began the mass registration exercise on 29th April 2019 and has since covered 11 out of the 16 regions in Ghana.
