Nana Addo Appoints first Muslim Judge To The Supreme Court

Nana Addo Appoints first Muslim Judge: Justice Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu has become the first Muslim to be nominated as a Supreme Court judge in Ghana.

He is part of the three legal brains President Akufo-Addo has nominated to the apex court of the land.

The other two are; a top Ghanaian Lawyer, Yoni Kulendi, and another appeal court judge, Justice Clemence J. Honyenuga.

Their nomination is subject to parliamentary approval as they replace three justices who are on retirement or are due for retirement this year.

The trio will replace Justices Julius Ansah, Nasiru Sulemana Gbadegbe and Anthony Alfred Bennin at the Supreme Court.

Akufo-Addo nominates Henrietta Mensa Bonsu and 3 others: President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has nominated law lecturer, Professor Henrietta Mensa Bonsu and three others for Parliament’s consideration for appointment to the bench of Supreme Court.

Prof Mensa Bonsu is a law lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ghana, Legon and President of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The three others are Justice Clemence Honyenugah, Justice Issifu Tanko Amadu, both Justices of the Court of Appeal and Mr. Emmanuel Yoni Kulendi, a private legal practitioner.

They are to replace Justices on the Supreme Court bench who are due for retirement.

The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye made the announcement in Parliament on Thursday, March 19, 2020.
