Management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital detains a young baby over unpaid bills

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] one and half-year-old baby Stephen Otchere has been detained by staff of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital over some unpaid bills after medical attention was given to him. According to a report by Ghanaian online news publication, UltimateFMOnline.com, the child had undergone treatment at the Burns and Intensive Care Unit of the hospital on July 8, 2017.

He was discharged on August 16, 2017 but was however, kept at the hospital because his parents could not afford to pay the bills accrued from the treatment. Speaking to UltimateFMOnline.com, the lead Nursing Officer at the hospital, Madam Theresa Kwaah, confirmed the situation.

She indicated that the parents were unable to pay the bills of GHC10,181.00 owed to the hospital. The mother of the baby, Agnes Nkrumah revealed how her child ended up in the hospital in the first place. The distraught mother stated that she had momentarily left her child alone while boiling water on a coal pot.

The unemployed woman said she only returned to see that the water had somehow poured on her child who was writhing in pain on the floor. Due to her unemployment, she stated that she could not cough up the amount being demanded by the hospital after using her life saving of GHC2,000 on bills thus far.
