Kpebu to Bawumia: Step aside, you offered nothing to Ghanaians when the opportunity was given to you

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has advised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to reconsider his presidential ambitions and instead support a younger candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership race.

Speaking on Accra-based TV3’s Key Points program, Kpebu argued that Bawumia had been given the opportunity to lead but had, in his view, delivered little. He believes the NPP would be better served by presenting a younger, “sellable” Muslim candidate to improve its chances in future elections.

“They should be looking at Patrick Boamah, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah. Bawumia should choose a younger Muslim and try to sell that to the party. Bawumia is not sellable. He delivered next to nothing,” Kpebu said.

He further noted that age should be a factor in the party’s decision-making. “Bawumia will be 70 years old at the time, and we will not try that again,” he stated, stressing that the NPP should give younger leaders a platform to step forward.

Despite Kpebu’s remarks, recent polling data suggests Bawumia remains the frontrunner. A survey by Global InfoAnalytics shows the Vice President leading the flagbearership race with 52% support, ahead of his closest contender, Kennedy Agyapong, who has 17%.

Kpebu’s comments are expected to spark further debate within the party as it prepares for its next leadership contest.
