John Mahama Sets Conditions for Accepting 2024 Election Results

Former President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has declared that he will not accept the results of the 2024 general elections if they are marred by irregularities and lack transparency.

In an interview with BBC in Accra, Mr. Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s democracy must be safeguarded with free, fair, and credible elections. He expressed concern over what he described as lapses in the electoral process under the current Electoral Commission (EC) leadership.

“I will not accept an election result filled with irregularities and one that lacks transparency,” Mr. Mahama stated. “Our democracy depends on the trust we have in our institutions, and if those institutions fail, then the legitimacy of the electoral outcome is compromised.”

Mr. Mahama urged international observers, civil society organizations, and the media to play active roles in monitoring and documenting the electoral process.

“We are not seeking favors; we are seeking fairness,” he said. “We want to compete on a level playing field where every Ghanaian’s voice is heard and respected.”

The former President’s comments have reignited discussions on electoral credibility and raised the stakes for the December 2024 elections. The Electoral Commission is yet to respond to his concerns, but political analysts expect these remarks to dominate campaign narratives in the coming months.

Mr. Mahama’s stance underscores the critical role of trust in electoral systems and the importance of addressing public concerns to ensure peaceful and credible elections in Ghana.
