John Mahama Nominates Alban Bagbin as Speaker for Ghana’s 9th Parliament

Accra, Ghana — President-elect John Dramani Mahama has officially nominated Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin as Speaker for Ghana’s 9th Parliament. The announcement, made via a statement on January 5, 2024, follows consultations between the National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the spokesperson for the Transition Team, the statement highlighted Bagbin’s unparalleled contributions to parliamentary governance and his extensive experience in legislative leadership.

“Rt. Hon. Bagbin has distinguished himself in the service of Parliament, rising from Member of Parliament for Nadowli to Minority and Majority Leader, and subsequently serving as Speaker of the 8th Parliament,” the statement read.

Bagbin’s nomination, the statement emphasized, comes at a pivotal time in Ghana’s democratic journey. His deep understanding of parliamentary processes and commitment to national service are expected to guide the legislative arm effectively in addressing critical challenges.

The President-elect expressed his confidence in Bagbin’s leadership, citing his ability to foster unity and ensure Parliament’s effective oversight of the executive branch.

“Under the stewardship of The Right Honourable Alban Bagbin, Ghana’s Parliament will be further strengthened to deliver effectively on its oversight responsibility,” Mahama assured.

Bagbin, a veteran in Ghana’s political landscape, has served in various capacities over his distinguished career, gaining a reputation for his impartiality, expertise, and dedication. His reappointment signals continuity and a renewed focus on legislative excellence as Ghana navigates the complexities of governance and development.

The formal election of the Speaker is scheduled to take place when Parliament convenes in the coming days, with Bagbin widely expected to garner significant support.

This nomination marks a significant milestone in President-elect Mahama’s transition, setting the stage for collaborative governance as the 9th Parliament begins its work.
