I advised my husband on several occasions to resign as Vice President – Matilda Amissah Arthur

During an interview with Joy News on June 29, 2023, Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur, the wife of the late Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur, shared that she had frequently advised her husband to resign from his position as Vice President of Ghana. However, upon reflection, she recognized the significance of his voice within the government and the potential void that his resignation would create.

Mrs. Matilda explained that she had urged him to step down multiple times, but she later realized the importance of his ability to express his views, even if they were not always heeded. She believed that his presence in the government was crucial for championing worthy causes and ensuring the nation stayed on the right path.

“Many times, many times but after I said that (he should resign) I realized that if he goes out, who will say the kind of things he says, so he should be there even if he is not listened to, say it and make a difference. I believe that if you are the only person who is doing the right thing in a place, not just politics, anywhere and you are the only person, don’t be discouraged, stay there and do the right thing, say the right thing, make a difference and it will impact, even if it has an impact on one person, you have done your job.”

On June 29, 2018, Kwesi Amissah Arthur tragically passed away after collapsing during a workout session at the Airforce Gym in Accra. He was swiftly taken to the 37 Military Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Born on April 29, 1951, Kwesi Amissah Arthur was an economist, academic, and politician. He served as the sixth Vice-President of Ghana from August 6, 2012, until January 7, 2017, during the tenure of former President John Mahama. Prior to that, he held the position of Governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2009 to 2012.
