Gov’t Providing Accommodation For 15,000 ‘Kayayes’ With Hot Lunch And Supper For 2 Weeks

Government through the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is accommodating and feeding about 15,000 head porters and other vulnerable persons for the period of the lockdown of Accra and Kumasi.

Following a decision by government to partially lockdown Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Kasoa as part of measures to mitigate the spread of the deadly Corona Virus, thousands of head porters in the affected cities left.

For those who could not leave and others whose attempts to leave failed, government has put in place measures to support them for close to two weeks period of the lockdown.

Mrs Cynthia Morrison, Gender, Children and Social Protection Ministery disclosed to journalists at a press briefing on Wednesday that the head potters, numbering about 15,000, would be catered for in terms of accommodation and meals.

“We have also visited facilities where we think it is suitable to accommodate our vulnerable brothers and sisters on the streets. We will accommodate them for the two weeks that we have imposed these measures. We currently have 15,000 of them that we are going to cater for. For those who have apartments, we will find ways of sending logistics to them to keep them away from coming to town and those we are going to keep we are going to cater for them. There is going to be enough food and there is going to be enough water,” Mrs. Cynthia Morrison said.

She, however, disclosed that the beneficiaries will be given lunch and Supper with a daily stipend of Ghc10.

“They will get hot meals for lunch and supper,” she added.

Within the period when the Kayaye people would be kept, they will also be trained on personal hygiene and social distancing and that 15,000 sanitizers would be handed over to them while they get registered and given IDs, after which the young ones would be sent back to their homes to go to school.

Meanwhile, 20 mentally challenged people who are living on the streets would also be housed.
