Government to expedite action in GHC 3.6 million bus branding scandal – Deputy Attorney General reveals

The government has begun an investigation into the infamous Metro Mass bus branding saga which occurred under the John Dramani Mahama administration; Deputy Attorney General, Joseph Dindiok Kpemka has disclosed to ABC News.

According to Mr Kpemka, the investigation being conducted by the police is ‘almost done’ and will soon come to the Attorney General’s Department for what he describes as ‘expedited’ action to be taken.

The bus branding contract was signed between the government and Smarttys Management and Productions in 2016 and it involved the rebranding of some 116 buses with about GHc3.6 million from Ghana’s oil revenue.

The scandal, which was widely criticized by many Ghanaians compelled the then Transport Minister, Dzifa Attivor to resign.

The Chief of Staff at the time, Julius Debrah subsequently ordered the Attorney General to investigate the matter but nothing was heard of the issue subsequently.

But speaking in an exclusive interview with ABC News, the Deputy Attorney General said the issue will soon go before the law courts of Ghana. He says other acts of alleged corruption under the erstwhile administration are being investigated and will soon go to trial.

“What I know is that bus branding is being investigated and the police are conducting serious investigations and I believe they are almost done and then I can tell you for sure that when it is brought to us we will expedite action and make sure it goes to court and then many other cases.

“But remember, that some of the cases we spoke about when we were in opposition are in court and I am not interested in discussing the merits of the matter but I’m interested in just discussing the fact that the cases are in court and it is for us to push our cases, they raise their defence and the court should pass judgement.”
