Ghana Infectious Disease Centre GIDC commissioned: Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on behalf of President Akufo-Addo, joined other stakeholders to commission Ghana’s first-ever 100-bed Infectious Disease Centre built to complement the National COVID-19 Treatment Centre at the Ga East Municipal Hospital.

With Government’s commitment to building at least 3 infectious disease centers as well as a Ghana Centre for Disease Control, the health facility was birthed by the Ghana Private Sector Fund with contributions from both private and public sector organisations. The 100-bed facility was constructed in just under 100 days!

“I commended the Ghanaian ingenuity, patriotism, and dedication to humanity by a team of men and women, 536 strong, working 24 hours to make the impossible a reality”.

“My thanks to the Ministry of Health, 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, the Built Environment Professionals, and the Ghana COVID-19 Private sector fund as well as the donors for making this possible”.

“Three more of these facilities are scheduled to be constructed in Kumasi, Tamale, and Takoradi. This shows that we can do it if we come together and put our minds to it”, he said.

Background of Ghana Infectious Disease Centre project

Construction is beginning for a 100-bed infectious disease isolation and treatment facility at the Ga-East Municipal Hospital to be completed in a record four weeks.

The initiative of the Ghana COVID-19 Private Sector Fund is being done in conjunction with the Ministry of Health in support of the fight against new coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The facility is said to be the first infectious disease center in the country and it’s to be constructed by the Ghana Armed Forces.

“Owing to the urgency and the current restrictions on the movement of people, we believe the Ghana Armed Forces is best placed to deploy quickly and execute within the set project schedules,” the Ghana COVID-19 Private Sector Fund stated in a letter to the Chief of Defence Staff.

There have been preliminary meetings between Fund and Director-General, Medical Services and Director Engineer Services on the project.

“Volunteer Architects and Engineers from the Ghana Institute of Architects, The Built Environment Professionals and the Ministry of Health have since the 9th day of April 2020 been working round the clock to finalize the design.

“They have been working in consultation with the National Case Management officials on COVID-19, the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers and the Ministry of Health,” the letter signed by Senyo Hosi, Acting Managing Trustee of the Fund, said.
