Ghana going back to IMF has made us a laughing stock

Ghana going back to IMF has made us a laughing stock

In his address as the keynote speaker at the 7th Ghana CEOs Summit, Former President John Dramani Mahama expressed his views on the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda and the government’s reliance on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial support. Mahama asserted that seeking assistance from the IMF has undermined the goal of achieving self-reliance and turned the Ghana Beyond Aid policy into a subject of mockery.

Mahama emphasized that under the Nana Akufo-Addo administration, the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda has remained a mere slogan without substantial actions. He stated, “Our return to the IMF with a begging bowl in hand has made our Ghana Beyond Aid policy the target of ridicule among commentators worldwide. It will require unwavering determination and a committed political will to shape our own economic destiny.”

According to Mahama, realizing the Ghana Beyond Aid vision necessitates the ability to formulate independent economic policies that prioritize the well-being of Ghanaian citizens. He stressed the importance of creating an environment that fosters sustainable growth, development, and job creation.

Furthermore, the current flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress criticized the government’s implementation of various taxation measures, including the Income Tax Amendment Bill, Excise Duty, Excise Tax Stamp Amendment, and Growth and Sustainability taxes.
