After months of speculation, Chief Hamilton Nixon Biney, a prominent figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has publicly confirmed the end of his marriage to Afia Akoto, a former Deputy CEO of MASLOC and a staunch member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a Facebook post on February 13, 2025, Chief Biney officially acknowledged their separation, expressing gratitude to God for what he believes is divine guidance. According to him, the traditional divorce process has been completed, marking the official end of their five-year marriage.
“A man’s heart plans his ways, but God Almighty directs his steps. Where God guides, He provides. That journey five years ago has traditionally and officially ended successfully, in Jesus’ name. Baba God, I am grateful for this day.”
He also extended appreciation to Apostle Selasie Addae and Apostle Emmanuel Baidoo for their support during this period.
Afia Akoto Had Earlier Revealed the Separation
Though Chief Biney’s post marks the first time he has publicly addressed the divorce, Afia Akoto had previously hinted at their split. In 2023, while addressing NPP supporters in the Okaikwei North Constituency, she revealed that her marriage had ended. She stated that her political opponents had attempted to use her relationship with an NDC stalwart against her, only to later discover they were no longer together.

Chief Biney’s public confirmation has sparked varied reactions across social media. Some criticized him for making the announcement, while others speculated that the timing of the revelation could be linked to potential political appointments ahead of the 2025 administration.

Chief Biney and Afia Akoto tied the knot in a colorful traditional ceremony on February 12, 2020. Their union was unconventional, as it brought together two individuals from opposing political parties.
