Catholic Bishop calls for investment in Quality Education for National Development

The Catholic Bishop of Konongo/Mampong Diocese in the Ashanti Region, Most Rev. Joseph Osei-Bonsu has called on Government to invest in quality education today for a prosperous nation tomorrow.

According to him, the state must make education in Ghana its top priority and devote a substantial amount of its annual budget to finance it for all school-going children to benefit.

Delivering a public lecture in Accra, to mark the 65th-anniversary celebration launch of Bishop Herman College (BIHECO), Most Rev Osei-Bonsu, noted that, education is key to the development of any nation worldwide and Ghana is no exception.

He said, “l think we should get our priorities right. If the resources of the nation are not being used for education but are being squandered by some people, then things are going to go wrong. Education must be of importance to us. We must consider it very important and invest in it, as much as we can”.

“I just wanted the young people to be able show me only one person who has been very drunk in school, who has been an alcoholic, who has been a wee smoker, who has been a cocaine user, who is been successful. Just show me one; if you show me one, I will gladly do it. But you can’t show me one person who has done those things and has been successful in life”.

According to him, “the key thing in life as a student is to learn, but if don’t learn, you’re not going to be ready for exams…that’s why you will be waiting for an ‘apor’, which may land you in trouble”.

He appealed to the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to intensify teaching of Religious and Moral education at all levels of education to instill discipline in the young people for a better society in the future.

The anniversary theme is, 65 years of quality education, The Bishop Herman College experience.
